Pinball FX3 - Nintendo Switch (Review)

Pinball FX3 (Switch(reviewed), PS4, Xbox One, Steam)
Developer: Zen Studios
Publisher: Zen Studios
Price: Free

Whether you played it as Pinball FX or Zen Pinball, the series of video pinball games from Zen Studios has been one of the best.  I named Marvel Pinball 3D my Nintendo 3DS eShop Game of the Year 2012, so I am very much a fan.

When the title was initially announced for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, I immediately asked if a Switch version was in the works.  I was basically told to hold my horses, and took that as a good sign.

Now, shortly after release on the other platforms, the game has arrived on the Nintendo Switch.  I've been playing it for the past few days, with almost half of the available tables, and I have to tell you; if you have the choice, this is the version of the game you are going to want.

Pinball FX3 Hits the Nintendo Switch December 12

After a short delay, Zen Studios has announced that you will finally be able to play Pinball FX3 on your Nintendo Switch on December 12!

They have also released a new trailer that shows off some of the great tables that will be available at launch, and touches on some of the features such as HD Rumble, vertical handheld mode (you can play touch screen or using buttons), and cross-platform tournaments. And as always, the game itself is free to download (this includes a free table: Sorcerer's Lair).

You can find a full list of the tables that will be available at launch below.

Halloween Movie Madness '17: The Darkest Hour

October is finally here!  This year, it brings the long awaited return of Halloween Movie Madness!  I decided I needed to try and make this year special, so most of the movies on this year's list are films that I haven't seen before(and I will probably wish I never sat through half of them).

The Darkest Hour
(2011)

Last night brought us yet another movie I haven't seen before.  Unlike Them, this one was released a mere six years ago.

The Darkest Hour is a movie about two app developers traveling to Moscow to sell their app or secure funding or something like that.  The film doesn't do a great job of telling us the exact reason for their trip, just that it was about their app.

HMM '13: Critters 2

It's October!  The doorway to not only the start of the greatest food season (early October to Christmas), but also to sexy nurses, zombies, and grown men dressing up like ponies.  That also means it is time once again for Halloween Movie Madness!  This year, I'll be taking a look back at the movies of my youth.  Every movie this year was released before I turned eighteen.  These are the Halloween movies that shaped me into the man I am today.  Some of them are scary.  Some are funny.  Some are fantastical.  Some are just weird.  And not all of them are good.  But to me, they are all Halloween movies.  Now, stand back, for your own safety!

Critters 2 Poster

Following up to yesterday's post, our movie for today is Critters 2, otherwise known as Critters Babies. After the way the first one scared me, I didn’t want to have anything to do with this movie for a while. In fact, I didn’t watch it until 1992, after Critters 4 had been released. The same friend I used to watch the first few Puppet Master movies with is the same guy that watched the Critters movies with. And we watched all four of them. In one day. Then again the following day. That was the weekend that began my lifelong love affair with the Critters series. I know they get worse as the series progresses, but that is part of the reason I love them so much.

HMM '13: Spaced Invaders

Spaced Invaders
1990

Spaced Invaders is a goofball comedy from the guy who unleashed Baby's Day Out upon the masses.  Seeing that while looking up information on the movie doesn't instill within me much hope, but I remember enjoying this movie when I was twelve, and that's enough for me.

Going from what I remember about this movie, it is a lot like Invader Zim, where hapless aliens are sent to conquer Earth.  As it turns out, they aren't very good at it.  And, much like Zim, they are not very big.

I also remember a particular scene where they are talking about getting the aliens off of Earth, and comparing the launch to a cherry bomb under a trash can.  Of course, being the stupid, impressionable mind that I was at the time, I thought it would be fun to try that myself.  It didn't do anything really cool, and I got grounded.

The other memory I have of this movie is where I was when I first saw it.  I was spending the night over at a family friend's house, and along with this movie, we rented Super Dodge Ball for the NES.  Lots of fun was had, mostly because I repeatedly whopped him in the game.  It was great, because the kid was kind of a jerk, and I was only there because I had to be.  Years later, when I met my future wife, I found out that she went to school with him.  She thought he was a jerk too.

Enough about the jerk, let's start the movie.

Okay, things are starting right out with the Imperial Atomic Space Navy flying around in the Martian Territorial Frontier, and aside from some fairly decent visual effects, we get a crappy knock-off of Mars, the Bringer of War.  Why they used a sound-alike version and not the real thing is beyond me.  Was Gustav asking for too much money?  Oy.  Okay, this is starting to grate on my nerves worse than Adele.

We find out that the Admiral was releived of duty, and that the new Admiral is outfitting each ship with Enforcer Drones, so no one deviates from the battle plan.  One of the aliens disagreed.  He shouldn't have.

We then are transported to Big Bean, Illinois.  Seriously.  I couldn't make that up.

Here, we are introduced to the town's sheriff, who immediately has a confrontation with the town's crazy old coot.  And we meet the sleazy business man.  On top of that, we find out it's Halloween.

The alien attack squad lands on Earth, and attempts to begin their mission of total human annihilation.  Things don't go well, and plenty of hijinks ensue.

This movie is not the best, but it is far from the worst.  Plus, it's appropriate for kids.  And, they also intertwine The War of the Worlds, which leads to a fun scene with the aliens freaking out over a guy sneezing.  So, if you are looking for a alien invasion movie you can watch with the whole family, check out Spaced Invaders.

And now, a couple gifs without context.

Join me tomorrow for Castle Freak, and possibly a special treat.

Why I Love Galaxy Quest & You Should Too

So, maybe it didn't actually turn out to be a weekly article like I had previously stated, but I am back once again with another Why I Love (and I promise to try and make this a more regular article)!  This time, I'm going to show you some of my favorite moments from Galaxy Quest.

Galaxy Quest Poster

For those of you unfamiliar with this movie (and I know this is a large number from personal experience), it is mainly a spoof of Star Trek.  The movie is about a group of actors who starred in a much loved sci-fi tv show called Galaxy Quest, and they now make their living doing appearances at conventions and grand openings and whatnot.  Some aliens have seen the broadcasts, and thinking them to be accurate historical accounts, come to them for help.  Hilarity ensues.

The following are my top moments from the film, in no particular order.

Why I Love The Stupids & You Should Too

As busy as things are lately, I have been watching a lot of movies.  I have been waiting until everyone else is sleeping, and then watching a movie almost every night for the past month and a half.  I have mostly been focusing on movies I haven't seen before, but I've also had a growing desire to watch one of my favorite nutball movies of all time.

I'm not trying to say that this movie is one of the best ever made, because it clearly is not.  That's not what this is about.  The movie deals with death and the after life, time travel, aliens, postal conspiracies, talking foliage, pets that are smarter than their owners, illegal arms deals, assassins, daytime talk shows, and Tom Arnold.  There really is something for everyone.  You might not enjoy the entire movie, but if you watch the whole thing and can't name a single part that you liked, you do not have a sense of humor and should immediately rethink the direction your life is headed.

HMM '12 Day 30: The Cabin in the Woods

It's almost the end of October! That means two very important things: Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts are here, and Halloween is very near! My favorite thing to do in October to prepare myself for Halloween is to, of course, watch movies that I feel best exemplify the season. Now, this doesn't just mean extreme gore fests (of course, I do love me some gore), but I like to include movies that have that Halloween feel. Anyway, let's get to Day 30 of Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

The Cabin in the Woods
(Lionsgate, 2012)

I have been agonizing over this movie for the past month.  Not because of how I feel about the movie, but because I wasn't sure how I was going to approach it.  Usually, I am one hundred percent against spoilers.  With this movie, however, I feel that I can't really talk enough about it without spoiling some things.  With that said, there will be some spoilers in this post.

HMM '12 Day 26: Mars Attacks

It's October! That means two very important things: Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts are here, and Halloween is near! My favorite thing to do in October to prepare myself for Halloween is to, of course, watch movies that I feel best exemplify the season. Now, this doesn't just mean extreme gore fests (of course, I do love me some gore), but I like to include movies that have that Halloween feel. Anyway, let's get to Day 26 of Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

Mars Attacks
(Warner Bros., 1996)

Today's movie is Mars Attacks.  This movie is based off of the series of Mars Attacks trading cards put out by Topps in 1962.  The cards were very violent (and cool) in their depictions of the Martian invasion.  The movie also graphically depicts the deaths of innumerable people, and there's nothing wrong with that.

HMM '12 Day 25: Pitch Black

It's October! That means two very important things: Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts are here, and Halloween is near! My favorite thing to do in October to prepare myself for Halloween is to, of course, watch movies that I feel best exemplify the season. Now, this doesn't just mean extreme gore fests (of course, I do love me some gore), but I like to include movies that have that Halloween feel. Anyway, let's get to Day 25 of Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

Pitch Black
(Universal, 2000)

Pitch Black is tonight's Halloween Movie Madness movie.  Well, I guess the new, full title is The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black.  Odds are you are more familier with either the movie's sequel, The Cronicles of Riddick, or maybe even the extremely well done prequel video game, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.

HMM '12 Day 15: Evolution

It's finally October! Anyway, let's get to Day 15 of Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

Evolution
(DreamWorks, 2001)

Last night's movie was Evolution, a.k.a. Ghostbusters With Aliens Instead.  It is even an Ivan Reitman film, so that is even more accurate.  And Dan Aykroyd has a role in the movie as the Governor of Arizona.

HMM '12 Day 14: The Thing

It's finally October! Anyway, let's get to Day 14 of Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

The Thing
(Universal Pictures, 1982)

Tonight's movie is the third from John Carpenter to make Halloween Movie Madness.  It also stars Kurt Russell and Wilford "Quaker Oats" Brimley.  That's right, it's The Thing.  And not the newer prequel.  Forget that junk.  I only like John Carpenter's remake.  On a side note, I was going to say Wilford "Liberty Medical" Brimley, but I like oatmeal more than I do diabetes.

HMM '12 Day 11: Starship Troopers

It's finally October! Anyway, let's get to Day 11 of Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

Starship Troopers
(TriStar Pictures, 1997)

Tonight’s movie is another one of those “Guy movies” I mentioned in yesterday’s post.  Starship Troopers is one of those sci-fi movies that has just the right amount of humor, camp, boobage, satire, and gore.  This is also going to be another shorter-sized HMM; my sinuses are all messed up and my forehead feels like it is going to asplode.  At least, I hope it's only sinuses.

HMM '12 Day 7: The Fifth Element

It's finally October! Anyway, let's get to Day 7 of Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

The Fifth Element
(Columbia Pictures, 1997)

Man, I haven't even started watching tonight's movie, and already I'm getting flack for it not being a Halloween movie. "It's got aliens but not like AHHH scary aliens coming to get us... it's like it's the future and my neighbor just happens to be an alien... ok. And Bruce just happens to need to save one."  That is an exact quote. I'm sure this isn't going to be the last movie I will take this flack over, but this is my list, not yours. As it says in my little intro statement thing in italics, I think that Halloween movies can be fun, they don't have to be all blood and gore. So while you may not agree with all of my choices, they are the ones I have made based on the movies I had to choose from.

HMM '12 Day 5: Slither

It's finally October! That means two very important things: Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts are almost here, and Halloween is near! My favorite thing to do in October to prepare myself for Halloween is to, of course, watch movies that I feel best exemplify the season. Now, this doesn't just mean extreme gore fests (of course, I do love me some gore), but I like to include movies that have that Halloween feel. Anyway, let's get to Day 5 of Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

Slither
(Universal Studios, 2006)

Last night's movie was Slither, a great throwback to the horror movies of the 80's.  You know when a movie starts off with an asteroid hurtling through space at Earth, things are going to be fun.  And fun is this movie’s middle name.  Well, maybe that should be last name... if it was the movie’s middle name, it would be Slifunther.  Of course, if it were the movie’s last name... you know what, nevermind.  I’m just getting sidetracked.

HMM '12 Day 2: They Live

It's finally October!  That means two very important things: Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts are almost here, and Halloween is near!  My favorite thing to do in October to prepare myself for Halloween is to, of course, watch movies that I feel best exemplify the season.  Now, this doesn't just mean extreme gore fests (of course, I do love me some gore), but I like to include movies that have that Halloween feel.  Anyway, let's get to Day 2 of Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

They Live
(Universal Studios, 1988)

Tonight's movie is the first from John Carpenter that are going to be a part of Halloween Movie Madness.  It also stars Roddy Piper.  They Live also spawned one of the most popular lines to ever come out of Duke Nukem's mouth.

HMM '12 Day 1: Little Shop of Horrors

It's finally October (technically)! Anyway, here I am with Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

Our first movie is one of my all-time favorites!

Halloween Movie Madness 2012 is Coming

With Halloween fast approaching, I have been preparing a little movie marathon.  I call this little treat Halloween Movie Madness.  I watch a movie that I feel is appropriate for the time of year, and then you get to read my ramblings about it.  This is supposed to go every day for the month of October, but I might extend it by either starting it early or running later.  It just depends on how many movies I want to watch.  I even have a cheesy logo I made for it.  Check it:

If that doesn't say AWESOME IS COMING, I don't know what will.
