Christmas Special Mania '12: Christmas Vacation

It's December, and almost Christmas!  Therefore, I've decided to do a follow up to my surprisingly popular Halloween Movie Madness!  Every night  through Christmas Eve, I will be watching a different Christmas movie or special and then rambling on about them, sometimes even being coherent!

Christmas Vacation
(Warner Bros. Pictures, 1989)

Christmas Vacation Poster

I have a confession to make: I haven't actually watched this movie in about four years.  Not for lack of wanting though.  We just didn't have the DVD, and while we talked about purchasing it every Christmas season, it just didn't happen.  This year is different though, and now I get to watch the movie with only patchy memories of it.

Things I remembered about the movie:

  • The part where they greased up the saucer and went down the hill so fast he wore the bottom away going down the street
  • The cleavage on the woman in the department store and the nipple jokes
  • The grandfather lying awake at night staring at the poster
  • The moose head cups
  • Explosive sewage
  • The cat trying to eat the lights
  • The driest turkey known to man

That is about all I remember off the top of my head.  Now that I've watched the movie again, I realize just how much I've missed this movie.  In just the first ten minutes, where they are on their little quest to find the perfect Christmas tree, I remembered why I loved this movie so much.

Christmas Vacation Clark Griswold

I also had a revelation.  I am Clark Griswold.  Falling off the roof.  Spending all that time stringing up the lights, only to have them not work because of something completely stupid.  Getting stuck in the attic.  All of that would happen to me.  I even have had my own crazy sledding mishap.  You know those old wooden toboggans?  I found out the hard way that I can stop one loaded with three people and travelling at top speed by simply sticking my face in the way.

Wooden Toboggan
Imagine this, with two adults and a kid on it, smashing my face.

I was actually looking forward to getting moved into our new house this month and putting up lights, but after this, there is no way I'll be putting anything out other than some of those inflatable decorations.  I don't want to die trying to make things look pretty.

If it's been a while since you've seen this, don't make the same mistake I did by waiting so long to watch this movie.  I will be watching this movie every year, and probably again this year.
