Halloween Movie Madness 2016: The Final Girls

The leaves are dying, the sky is cloudy, and even more things than usual are pumpkin spice flavored.  That can mean only one thing: It's October!  This year marks the return of Halloween Movie Madness!

The Final Girls (2015)

Our fourth movie for HMM '16 is one that I discovered through some random list on Imgur.  It sounded interesting from the little blurb that was posted, so I thought I would give it a shot.

I am glad I did, because this movie is an incredible subversion of the Summer Camp Slasher genre.  In The Final Girls, a group of friends is at a theater for a special anniversary screening of Camp Bloodbath, a Summer Camp Slasher movie.

Our heroine's mother(who had died a few years prior) was one of the actresses in the movie, and that was what ultimately drove her to go to the screening.  While they are watching the movie, a freak accident causes the theater to become engulfed in flames.  Our group cuts the screen to go out behind it, but instead, they end up in Camp Bloodbath!

After they figure out what has happened, they try to find their way out of the campgrounds, only to re-enter them again immediately.  Once they realize escape is impossible, they decide to stand and fight.

I can't really go into any further detail, because I really don't want to spoil any of the great moments this movie offers up.  All the gifs for this post?  They are from the trailer for Camp Bloodbath.  I wanted to make some from other scenes, but I couldn't being myself to spoil the fun!

This movie made it so that I want to watch Camp Bloodbath on its own.  It seems like a very cheesy, gory, entertaining movie.  The Final Girls takes that idea and turns it on its severed head.

It's funny, it's gory, it's only mildly cheesy, and it is also smartly written.  And as much as I enjoy The Cabin in the Woods, I think The Final Girls is better.

The Final Girls gets five camp fires out of five.
